Hulu's Well-Liked Series 'The Great,' Starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, Won't Be Renewed for Season 4.
Crafted, scripted, and overseen by Tony McNamara, the show 'The Great' redefined historical drama by reimagining the life of Catherine the Great, the reigning empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796.
The official premise of the series presents Catherine as an optimistic, romantic young woman who journeys to Russia for an arranged marriage with the unpredictable Emperor Peter. Anticipating love and positivity, she instead confronts a perilous, morally corrupt, and antiquated world that she is determined to revolutionize. Her mission involves eliminating her husband, challenging the authority of the church, outsmarting the military, and gaining the support of the court.
Having premiered its third season this May, the show blended genres to portray a renowned historical figure and her impact on history.
Although the conclusion of season 3 did not culminate in a classic cliffhanger, it concluded with Catherine's remarkable evolution as a ruler (with a stylish new haircut). Additionally, there's a scene where she dances to the tunes of AC/DC.
Throughout its broadcast, the series garnered enthusiastic critiques and honors, securing seven Emmy nominations since its debut in 2020.
In 2022, it secured an Emmy award for Outstanding Period Costumes. This same year marked the debut nominations for Fanning and Hoult, who play the leading roles in this popular series. Fanning's depiction of Catherine also led to her receiving various other recognitions, including a SAG Award, a Critics Choice Award, an Independent Spirit Award, and two Golden Globe nominations, as reported by Deadline.
In addition to Hoult and Fanning, the show showcased stellar performances by Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.
